Upperside

  • Easiest to identify from the other Skippers as there is a mottled, chequered pattern on both the upper and underside of its wings
  • Males have a dark line on the forewing
  • Distinctive from other butterflies as they hold their forewings at an angle above flat hindwings

Distribution

Present throughout England and in the Dumfries and Galloway area in Scotland, not present in Ireland

Habitat

Found in a variety of habitats where the grass is tall and uncut e.g. woodland rides and clearings, pastures, roadside verges, hedgerows, urban parks and churchyards

 

Similar Species

Lulworth Skipper, Small and Essex Skipper are smaller and do not have strongly mottled pattern to wings
