Upperside

  • Brilliant white with black tips, though these do not extend as far down the wing and are not as prominent as the Large White
  • Both sexes have black spots on the forewing, with the females being bolder

Underside

  • White on the forewing and creamy-white on the hindwing
  • Lacks the dark vein markings of the Green-veined White

Widespread throughout Britain and Ireland

Habitat

A common butterfly found in a variety of habitats particularly gardens and allotments where cabbages are grown

 

Similar Species

Large White has much larger black patch at tip on upperside, Green-veined White has prominent markings along veins on underside
